Historical Background & Intellectual Luminaries

Established in 1902 on Prague's monumental Ferdinandova Avenue (today Národní třída), Café Louvre occupied a grand first-floor suite of rooms designed in the airy Viennese Secession and Art Nouveau manner. From its founding, it established separate salons for chess, billiards, reading, and society dining.

In 1911 and 1912, Albert Einstein regularly frequented the café during his tenure as professor of theoretical physics at the German University in Prague, holding lively scientific discussions in its quiet corners. Writer Franz Kafka and his close friend and biographer Max Brod met here with fellow members of the philosophical Circle of Christian von Ehrenfels.

Following forced closure during the communist era in 1948, the grand rooms were painstakingly restored and reopened in 1992, returning the institution to its rightful role in Central Europe’s coffeehouse heritage.

Architectural Atmosphere & Salmon-Pink Salons

The café is renowned for its distinctive salmon-pink and ivory plasterwork, tall arched windows framing the bustle of Národní street, delicate crystal chandeliers, and classic bentwood dining chairs. The adjacent historical Billiard Hall features authentic heavy slate tables beneath brass task lighting.

Bohemian Pastry & Gastronomic Highlights

Café Louvre offers an extensive menu celebrating both traditional Bohemian comfort cuisine and delicate imperial confectionery:

  • Grand Café Louvre Hot Chocolate: Decadently thick Czech-style melted chocolate served in a traditional glass with dairy cream.
  • Svíčková na Smetaně: Classic Czech larded beef sirloin in spiced root-vegetable cream sauce, served with bread dumplings and cranberries.
  • Větrník & Medovník: Traditional caramel choux puff pastry filled with whipped cream, alongside layered Bohemian honey cake.
