New York Café
The Gilded Belle Époque Palace of Hungarian Letters and Grand Boulevard Glamour
Historical Background & The Literary Golden Age
Commissioned by the New York Life Insurance Company and inaugurated on October 23, 1894, the New York Café quickly became the beating cultural heart of Budapest. Legend recounts that on opening night, the celebrated playwright Ferenc Molnár and his fellow writers threw the keys into the Danube so that the café could never close its doors.
During the fin-de-siècle and interwar years, Hungary’s leading writers, journalists, and poets gathered daily in its subterranean gallery and gilded salons. The iconic literary journal Nyugat ("West") was edited at its marble tables by figures such as Mihály Babits, Endre Ady, and Dezső Kosztolányi. The head waiter, affectionately remembered as Gyula Reisz, was renowned for supplying impoverished poets with pen, paper, and free coffee.
Architectural Splendor & Baroque Revival Stucco
Designed by master architect Alajos Hauszmann in collaboration with Flóris Korb and Kálmán Giergl, the café is a four-tiered tour de force of Italian Renaissance and Baroque Revival grandeur. Soaring twisted marble columns, gilded stucco reliefs, cascading Venetian glass chandeliers, and ceiling frescoes by Gusztáv Mannheimer and Ferenc Eisenhut depict allegory, music, and the arts.
The central grand staircase connects multiple balustraded mezzanines, creating a palatial theatrical space where live violinists and salon pianists perform throughout the day beneath golden capitals and ornamental mirrors.
Culinary Traditions & Pastry Artistry
Honoring imperial Austro-Hungarian confectionery traditions, the pastry kitchen crafts elaborate traditional tortes, strudels, and artisanal chocolate elixirs served on monogrammed porcelain.
- Traditional Hungarian Dobos Torte: Five delicate sponge layers filled with rich chocolate buttercream and crowned with a glossy caramel crackle shard.
- New York Spiced Hot Chocolate: Thick dark hot chocolate infused with cinnamon, nutmeg, orange zest, and topped with mountain dairy cream.
- Sacher Torte & Rákóczi Túrós: Classic apricot-glazed chocolate cake alongside Hungarian sweet curd cheese pastry with baked meringue lattice.
